Very Happy Meals

Last night was drive-thru. Tonight? Hmmm. Something from the freezer, perhaps?

Ah, to relive preparenting days — all those glorious gourmet meals, which have now been replaced by boxed mac ’n’ cheese.

Newsflash: Eating well and parenthood don’t have to be mutually exclusive. The proof? Gastrokid, a new site that’s witty, informative, and filled with polished vignettes written by parents (one an editor at Bon Appétit) who love superb, healthy food and want their kids to, too.

Start with the site’s first-person chronicles of reinventing family food (like BLT pizza) then dig into recipes for cupcakes with Green & Black organic chocolate frosting. Follow with helpings of kids’ tasting notes and wash it down with reviews of adult restaurants that kids love.

But we’ve saved the best for last: You’ll find nary a whiff of my-kid-eats-only-foie-gras pretense.

So don’t be surprised if they spotlight mac ’n’ cheese (albeit with imported Parm).

And the drive-thru? Well, there’s pretty much no excuse for that.
