Though kids plus a white-tablecloth restaurant don’t usually add up, the fancy French spot has mastered the formula. Tykes enjoy off-menu selections ranging from organic carrot soup to zucchini fritters and can even visit the kitchen to watch the chefs at work.
Junior may not yet hunger for unagi and yellowtail, but he can get his feet wet at this low-key sushi spot serving kid-friendly maki (carrot, avocado) on tiny, cartoon-adorned plates.
The retro-themed spot (check the Formica tables and lava lamps) caters to kiddos with meals (Smuckers Uncrustables, chicken nuggets) packed in vintage lunch boxes. Grown-ups stake out the outdoor tiki/beer garden way past bedtime.
Kids scribble on a wall-size chalkboard, tinker with action figures, and play musical instruments at Avondale’s intimate restaurant. The supply of toys on hand is almost as genius as the kids’ menu, featuring fresh organic dishes.
The bakery/cafe sells the same delicious vegan and organic goods (banana fudge brownies, sticky buns, fruit parfaits), as its sister spot, Bleeding Heart Bakery. But it trumps it in family fun, with weekly storytelling and free cupcakes for kids on their birthdays.
Of course you’ll order a cupcake. Beyond that, the kids’ menu has pint-size portions of French toast, buttered noodles, PB&J, and more. It’s worth browsing the grocery for organic purees and teether biscuits.
The casual Italian joint’s perpetual dining deal can’t be beat: Kids 12 and under eat free every day, 4:30-6 p.m. Children’s choices (corkscrew pasta, cheese pizza) are simplified takes on regular menu favorites (fusilli with chicken, prosciutto pizza).
As if the resto’s homey, comfort food menu wasn’t enough, Sunday is family night at the Webster Street location. Magicians and balloon animal artists entertain your clan tableside, and a make-your-own sundae bar provides a sweet finish.
Ignore the name and trust your instincts at this sweet spot. Too many options (ice cream, yogurt, soy, zillions of toppings) make decisions tough, but the result is worth the mental strain.
